Scarborough Bay at Night - Photography from the Yorkshire Coastline

06th June 2017
As part of a recent trip to the Yorkshire Coastline I spent quite a few hours exploring the sea front at Scarborough, walking down the cliff paths to the famous Lido before making my way along the bay towards the Grand Hotel and stunning Victorian Spa bridge.

Having parked the car on the Esplanade, my first and final location of the day were the group of stunning cliff top viewpoints overlooking the whole of the South Bay. I arrived on location just early enough to catch the last of the sunlight high enough above the horizon to illuminate the stunning rooftops around the bay.

Once the sun had dropped behind the buildings I made my way down to the sea front to look for opportunities around the lido & sea walls. As it was high tide the water came right up to and over the top of the sea walls creating beautiful lines in the scenery. As I had a little time wait for the sunset I sent a good half an hour photographing the waves breaking over the sea wall and steps running down into the sea, the high tide meant for great conditions to capture the movement in the water crashing against the sea walls.

As the sun began to set I made my way back along to the main beach at Scarborough South Bay to capture the sunset behind the rooftops of the buildings along the promenade. Gradually I made my way underneath the Victorian Spa Bridge and found a good composition to include the bridge and the distance marina lighthouse, both lit artificially against the last of the setting sun.

The evening light lasted long after sunset creating a stunning afterglow on the horizon which blended beautifully with the artificial light on the sea front. I finished evening capturing a the complete view of bay from the Esplanade viewpoint capturing what must be the classic view of Scarborough as it contains so many of the features of the coast and historic buildings within the town.
