Autumn in Cornwall - St Ives in November

The quality of light in Cornwall is matched only by that on the north western coast of the Scottish Highlands. An out of season trip to the Cornish coast is a first for me.

St Ives in November was fantastic, quiet streets, empty beaches and shops still open, and it proved to be a fantastic week of relaxation and photography. The sociably late sunrise time allowed me to capture the sun rising above the horizon on most mornings. The harbour and beaches in St Ives offer so many opportunities you could photograph for a month without repeating viewpoints.

The classic harbour view from the roadside was 2 minutes from our accommodation making it ideal for the first mornings outing. I was treated to a blend of threatening stormy light with a fabulous warm sunrise out of frame over to the right, a real treat to experience with conditions not possible to make a bad photograph in.

During the week we were able to explore multiple locations, some new, some old favourites. The gallery below contains highlights from a week of fantastic Atlantic drama with most images taken shortly after sunrise or at sunset when the light was at its most spectacular.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather all week with very little persistent low cloud or rain. We experienced a number of quick downpours, lightening, multiple rainbows and bright sunshine making it an interesting trip as we had to be constantly aware of what was on the horizon.

If other work commitments allow I’m hoping to travel to Cornwall again next autumn to capture more of the fantastic coastline.
